Cactus Species Stenocereus treleasei is a cactus that is shrub or tree like with several branches that tend to emerge close to the base but also occasionally higher up the main trunk. Individual stems can reach 6' to 12' ft. tall. stems are upright, columnar, dark green with bluish green buds and can have diameters of up to 8" to 9" in diameter. It has 15 to 20 strong ribs. The spines are often indistinguishable from the central and marginal. 1 to 4 central spines averaging 1-1/2" to 2" inches long, 10 to 13 yellowish colored radial spines from 1/4" to 1/2" inch long. Pinkish tube like flowers usually appear near the new tip growth and open at night The fruits are edible, red spherical shaped and reach a diameter of up to 2" inches. The flesh is dark red. Drought tolerant once well established. Very rare in cultivation/collections, seldom seen and often very hard to find.

Flower/Fruit : Are pink to rose colored with a white throat. Average 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" diameter blooms. Fruit is an average of 2" in diameter, red fleshed and edible. Flowers and fruits similar to S. stellatus.
More Info : The name Steno-cereus is from the Greek words stenos which means "tight, narrow" and refers to the relatively narrow ribs of the plants and cereus for is for "candle". The name treleasei was used to name this species in honor of the American botanist William Trelease.
Care : Easy to care for Stenocereus Treleasei likes good draining soil, full sun, regular to occasional water for established plants in summer, very little water in winter. Can take temps to 24 degrees for very brief periods, can have stem damage below 32 degrees for very prolonged periods. Likes 50 F and up.
