Cliestocactus Straussii Species Plant
Cactus species Cleistocactus strausii has long grey-green columnar stem growth that can eventually reach 8 to 10 feet in height and narrow 2.5" to 4" diameter stems at full maturity. The stem growth is multi-ribbed with 25 ribs but hard to see them since the yellowish-brown spines are covered in white radials. Cleistocactus strausii has burgundy-red flowers produced in summer on plants 18" to 24" tall or taller. Cleistocactus strausii blooms are tubular and barely open, with only the style and stamens protruding. The blooms average 3" long and emerge horizontally from the sides of the tall columnar stems.
Specimen Size: 9" tall by 3" in diameter.
Care; Cultivated plants can be container grown in rich well draining potting soil-mix and will flower freely, can also be ground planted with good draining soil and on a slight mound as Cleistocactus strausii dislikes too much water in winter, water well though in summer for rapid growth. It makes an attractive landscape plant and or container patio plant where some height is needed. Cleistocactus strausii likes strong sunlight but not extremely high temperatures over 100 degrees so give some shade for inland locations in summer. Hardy to 20 degrees for short periods.
Native to; Higher elevations in Bolivia and Argentina 8000-9500 ft.
Common names; Also commonly called (silver torch cactus).
